Perla Anna Killiam Matthews (1879-1978) left behind a truly remarkable collection of photographs documenting her time as teacher-in-charge of the school gardens program at the Edgar Allan Poe School in South Philadelphia (1914-1921). The photographs trace the development and cultivation of a piece of land between the newly erected Edgar Allan Poe School (1913) and the Clark, Thomas and Co. Furniture Factory just below Passyunk Avenue on the Girard Estate in South Philadelphia. See images of this Philadelphia public school garden created over 100 years ago, and learn about the school garden movement from this time period.
