“A Seminary in Mt. Airy” explores theological education, campus life, and architecture at the Lutheran seminary in Philadelphia. The exhibit is part of the Bicentennial Celebrations of United Lutheran Seminary, the institution formed by the merger of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia.

A small group of spirited, confessional professors left the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg to form the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia in 1864. In 1889, the seminary moved from Franklin Square in Center City to a more verdant and spacious campus in Mt. Airy. This exhibition explores theological education, campus life, and architecture on the Mt. Airy campus and the paths that led to the reunification of these institutions more than 150 years after their split. Learn about the history of the seminary and developments in theological education. See campus life through the writings, albums, and memorabilia of seminarians as they navigated the changing church and society. Experience Krauth Memorial Library, one of the first buildings on campus; it showcases the use of skylights and glass floors to provide light in a space designed before the wide-spread adoption of electricity.

The exhibition is part of the Bicentennial Celebrations of United Lutheran Seminary and will be on display from September 16 through December 22, 2026. Visitors may view the exhibition inside Krauth Memorial Library. The library is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
