Before Hollywood: Philadelphia and the Birth of the Movies explores Philadelphia’s role as the cradle of motion pictures, where movies literally and metaphorically took their first steps. As the nation’s manufacturing capital in the 19th century, Philadelphia was the crossroads where artists, inventors, and entrepreneurs realized the dream of transforming still images into motion. Intensely researched and produced over several years, “Before Hollywood” draws heavily from local libraries, archives, and collections in presenting some of the oldest and rarest images of and about Philadelphia.

Andrew Ferrett (director) and Jon Kohl (editor) will discuss the film in a Q&A following the show.
